Formulating with Beeswax for Candles and Home Fragrance

As consumers become more environmentally conscious, the demand for sustainable and eco-friendly products continues to grow and beeswax, a natural and renewable resource, offers a compelling alternative to synthetic materials.

Today is World Bee Day so join us as we celebrate their remarkable contribution to planet earth, but also the myriad of amazing products we can create with their amazing produce.

Honeybees are essential to our food supply, and according to the Food and Agriculture Organisation, pollinate a third of the world’s crops. They are also remarkable producers of valuable byproducts, including beeswax, honey, and propolis.

Studies show that honeybees produce more than they need of these substances for colony survival, so we can harvest them sustainably to create natural products. This sustainable practice ensures the health of the beehive while allowing us to benefit from the remarkable properties of these bee-derived ingredients, and by using what the bees produce in excess, we can create effective products without harming the bees.

Is beeswax an oil?

Unlike conventional waxes, beeswax is not oil-based; it is a natural wax produced by honeybees as they construct their honeycombs and is a combination of various long-chain alkanes, esters, and fatty acids secreted by the worker bees. In comparison to vegetable oils, which are liquid at room temperature, beeswax is a solid material, making it a perfect ingredient for a variety of uses.

One of the most popular uses of beeswax is in the creation of candles. Beeswax candles offer a variety of benefits compared to paraffin candles, burning cleaner, lasting up to twice as long as paraffin candles of similar size, and avoiding the artificial fragrances often found in paraffin candles.

Why use beeswax in candle making?

Beeswax is incredible for candle making for a multitude of reasons. Unlike paraffin wax, which is derived from petroleum, beeswax is a natural and renewable resource. This means it is an eco-friendly choice that supports beekeepers. But the benefits go beyond sustainability. Beeswax burns cleaner, emitting a soft, natural light and a hint of honeyed sweetness. Plus, it produces negative ions that help purify the air, reducing allergens and pollutants. Paraffin wax, on the other hand, can emit harmful toxins, such as benzene, a carcinogen and toluene, linked to respiratory problems and nervous system issues. Beeswax candles also boast a longer burn time thanks to their higher melting point. In short, beeswax offers a luxurious, natural experience that’s both kind to the environment and peoples’ lungs.

Can you add fragrance oil to beeswax candles?

For an elevated sensory experience, fragrance oils can be added to beeswax candles. This allows brands to either complement or mask the natural honey-like aroma, while expanding their product range with customised scent profiles. Beeswax readily accepts fragrance oils, allowing for a wide range of customisation options – from floral and fruity to earthy and spicy blends.

However, it is important to be aware of the flash point (temperature at which the oil can ignite) of the essential oils being used. Most essential oils have a flash point between 100-200°F (37-93°C), but ensure the wax is not too hot when adding the essential oils. And ventilation is another important factor to consider. Work in a well-ventilated area, as the concentrated vapours of essential oils can be potent.

How much essential oil to add to beeswax candles?

General guidance suggests using 1-2 ounces of scent for every pound of beeswax and to consider using a thermometer to ensure the wax temperature is suitable for adding the essential oils. However, determining the amount of essential oil depends on the outcome you desire. For a light fragrance, use around 6% essential oil, or for a stronger fragrance, use up to 10% essential oil.
